Volanakis’ idyllic composition, with the first sunbeams appearing in the east, is another hymn to his seascapes. The atmosphere, with soft tonal hues reflected in the serene waters of the sea, conveys a strong lyrical style. The composition is balanced and the large scale of the central image is masterfully offset by the cloud formations on the distant horizon. In the foreground, the perfect harmony and beauty are carefully interrupted by the appearance of black piles emerging from the sea and reflected in the transparent waters.

A fishing sailboat dominates the centre of the scene; its detailed pictorial rendering is impressive. Some fishermen are on deck with their nets gathered, while others are perched on the mast, tying the sails. In the background of the seascape, various one, two and three-masted sailboats are depicted sailing in various directions, while bright-yellow massifs are faintly visible under the blinding light of dawn.
