Once again, Volanakis represents one of his favourite themes, fishing with nets. It is a theme that allows him to depict the mellowness of daybreak and the vastness of the sea, but also to put emphasis on human activities. This time, in the centre of the composition he depicts two fishing sailboats, facing each other, with fisherman collecting the nets they have cast into the water. His detailed description is impressive; in one fishing vessel with gathered sails he depicts three fishermen, and in the other boat, with the mast removed, he depicts five fishermen at work and one observing them a little further away. Their garb varies; some are wearing white shirts, others red or black waistcoats. Their head coverings also vary; some appear with straw hats and others with fezzes. Volanakis also accurately annotates the fittings of the ships, while the rest of the landscape has been rendered in a completely schematic way to balance the composition.
In a perfectly serene atmosphere, he depicts nature in all its glory and showcases the uniqueness of his descriptive skills.
