This panoramic seascape is composed of many individual pictorial references and enriched with themes of genre painting.

Volanakis once again seeks to accurately represent a scene from the everyday life of fishermen and chooses the moment of preparation, before net fishing begins. A fishing sailboat with its sails taut on the masts dominates in the centre of the image. Most of the deck is covered by a red canvas sunshade and, on the other part of it, two fishermen are depicted sitting, their nets carefully hung, ready to be cast into the sea. Another fisherman in a small boat is rowing towards them.

The scene takes place in the open sea but relatively close to the shore, where the fish-pier and the anchorage with many different anchored sailboats are clearly visible. Occasional seaside buildings appear along the coast, as well as some rows of trees in front of the semi-mountainous massif.

The scene is completed with the familiar image of a sailboat with open sails sailing away in the distant horizon.
