A nocturnal seascape awash in the dull colours of moonlight has been crafted with Volanakis’ recognisable realistic descriptions. The weak rays of the light are reflected in the serene waters, creating water reflections and chiaroscuro play. Another characteristic composition by the painter, with the vast sea expanding in all its splendour across the entire width of the painting. Sailing ships are traveling around it at various lengths and widths, and there is also a pictorial reference to the coastal zone in a single area. The main theme, as always, unfolds in the centre of the image, and here it regards night fishing. A fishing sailboat with four fishermen is depicted in detail with all its rigging, masts, antennas, sails, ropes, even its canvas deck cover. Beside it, a fisherman is trying to approach it rowing upright in a boat. The bright light of the fishing boat’s lamp is particularly striking, attracting the viewer’s gaze and stealing the show.
